Improved support for people with dementia and their carers

People who are living with dementia & their carers come into contact with many different areas of the NHS, from GP & community services, to A&E, inpatient & palliative care services. Dementia rarely exists in isolation, & many people who develop it have, or go on to develop, other long-term conditions that require specialist care. Over time they may also need emergency treatment for falls or infections. Improved support can benefit everyone, people with dementia, carers & professionals.

Points

If you are a Doctor, Nurse, HCA, Physio, OT, Speech and Language Therapist, Chiropodist, Audiologist, Optometrist, Dentist, Dietician, Pharmacist or indeed any healthcare professional who provides support for adults (& particularly older adults) you will be meeting & offering treatment to people with dementia. Dementia is YOUR business, and I believe that you deserve the training and insight you need to provide the level of care that your patients deserve and that you would want to provide.

Carers lift a great deal of the health care burden form the public purse. Their need for respite is a health need. The NHS must act to provide respite care two or three times a year, to safeguard health. Equally dementia is a health problem. Only a consultant can diagnose dementia. Stop pushing those with dementia into the commercial social system. There's little help there.. but significantly it strips family carers of all they possess, leaving them destitute when partners finally die.

People who have Dementia have lots of Special Needs ( & problems ) which are often overlooked by ALL Hospital Staff & this why am supporting Lucy's Idea

Improved training for care staff = better care and dignity for people with dementia. Also leads to less conflict and depression which will save money for the NHS. Many problems in care homes occur because of the lack of training in communication with people who have dementia. It's time for all who deal with these diseases of the brain to realize that there may be no way a person can respond to instructions. These are diseases which eliminate brain cell and therefore thinking. Lose your own ego.

Hospital A treats the patient's Dementia - Hospital B treats the same patient's urinary tract infections. Neither hospital can access the patient's notes at the other hospital as their computer systems are not compatible. Time wasted in A&E when the patient has to be admitted. Repetition of basic information and history. Frustration for the carer and for health staff. So We need to integrate health care, then health and social care
