As we experience an economic contraction, agricultural land use will shrink, giving us an unprecedented opportunity to restore green space, plant trees and to re-wild spaces to increase carbon sequestration. This presents a dilemma for the movement, a choice between re-wilding in a planned, measured way with buy-in from the government and other stake holders, or in a radical direct-action method that asks for neither permission nor forgiveness.
Efforts at re-wilding need to be integrated into land use that sequesters carbon and feeds people first. Re-wilding for the sake of restoring endemic and indigenous species at the expense of poor carbon management and human starvation is a form of inhumane ideological purity on the part of some segments of the biological science community.
Land reclaimed from agriculture or real estate development needs to be returned to as wild a state as possible, as soon as possible. The process of organizing human populations vertically to reduce their footprint and sprawl is the single most important driving principle in healing the Earth.
It is vital we look to regain the balance with nature, the land and wildlife. Re-wilding lands and habitats for nature and wildlife to re-establish and thrive.
