fruit and veg ... can't we just ditch all plastic shrink wrapping, having all fruit and veg loose, weighing stuff ourselves and using paper bags???

Points

Yes, it's ridiculous that things like aubergines are individually wrapped. Also if you buy broccoli in shrink wrapped plastic it is cheaper than buying loose so it is actively encouraging customers to buy more plastic.

Totally agree... Still use paper bags in the farm shop & greengrocers so why not in supermarkets? I use them over & over until they tear. Works in the US for all shopping so I struggle to understand why it hasn't happened here.

Fruit & veg have their own natural packaging they do not need to be shrink wrapped as well.

There is no need for the vast majority of fruit and veg to have any packaging, and the coop is one of the worst supermarkets for this. Provide paper bags for things like mushrooms, it's better for them than plastic trays

Oli you are right the coop is one of the worst shops for shrink wrap. I often leave buying veg in the coop because I know I can buy it loose elsewhere.

We have to change consumer buying habits and what we view as convenience. Those who are rushing to get the weekly shop done will grab a prepacked carton of mushrooms instead of weighing them out. The 'personal stresses of modern life' seem to out weigh the stresses of global climate change.
